CHAIRMAN'S
MESSAGE
From time to time, we receive letters from members in various areas inquiring about organizing meetings of the Travelers’ Century Club in their vicinity. As you know from our Web site and calendar, there are many TCC chapters that have regular meetings. Your headquarters will be glad to assist you in forming a chapter.
Special thanks to Janet Johnson for an excellent educational presentation covering Ethiopia at our June luncheon.
At our September meeting, we plan to have a special presentation from our Treasurer, Michael Sholer, covering his trip to Eastern Europe.
Please remember that we have an opening for a qualified Area Coordinator in Texas.
This past March we decided to put the Info Files online, so that you may download them at your convenience. New Info Files are listed in each Centurian. We are surprised at the number of postcards we have received from members asking us to continue mailing them the Info Files when they have access to the Internet. If you are in this group, perhaps you can let us know if you wish to withdraw this request. We will continue to mail the Info Files to those members who do not have computers. Our new Info Files will have a link with additional information on the destination. This information cannot be printed and included in the mailed version.
We hope to see many of you at our September meeting in Newport Beach.

The UK TCC Chapter and the
Republic of Ireland are planning
a possible international TCC
weekend meeting in Granada,
Spain, in the fall of 2011, according
to UK Area Coordinator Donna Marsh. She says the location
was selected “for the weather,
history, architecture, food,
and for the opportunity to travel
relatively easily to a number
of TCC countries.” She adds:
“Following the success of the
Dublin weekend (last year), we’re
hoping we can get a good
turnout from TCC members
globally, especially from our
European friends.”

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Have you been accused by your friends of having been bitten by “the travel bug?” Your friends just might be right. We all have our own motivating factors in wanting to travel to various destinations – whether or not it is to try to complete the TCC list. Most of us know someone who has completed the list, but is still often on the road to somewhere on this marvelous blue planet of ours!
Robert Louis Stevenson said, “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”
Have you noticed that the more you travel, the more you want to travel? There’s a word for that; Dromomania. Wikipedia states that “Dromomania,” also known as “traveling fugue,” is an uncontrollable psychological urge to wander. Generally, the term is used to describe people who have a strong emotional or even physical need to be constantly traveling and experiencing new places, often at the expense of their family, work and social lives. Some consider it a borderline personality disorder. Sound like your or someone you know? I know I’ve been bitten!

The TCC Board approved new titles for the different levels of total countries visited by members. After the first 100 countries, the title of the award for the next level of visits to 150 or more countries is Silver. Members receive a Gold Award for completing travel to 200 or more countries, a Platinum Award for traveling to 250 or more destinations and a Diamond Award for 300 countries. They receive a Special Award for visiting all 320 countries on the TCC list.

Michelle Arbeit, based in Memphis,
has volunteered to be the new Area
Coordinator for Tennessee. She is a
painter and designer,
and travel is her
passion, having visited
110 countries
and territories on
seven continents.
She obtained her
undergraduate degree
in psychology from the University of
Rochester and a Master’s degree in studio
arts and film from Harvard
University. For seven years she ran her
own jewelry design business with her
twin sister,Wendy, also a TCC member.
She has worked for a consulting firm in
D.C. and as a program manager for the
National Italian American Foundation.
TCC members in the area may contact
her at travelingtwinz@yahoo.com.

Even though TCC members have traveled to over 100 countries – and a few have been to 300 or more – it would be interesting to hear what destinations (cities or areas or places) you put at the top of your list to visit while you are still in good health, relatively speaking. This might be referred to as your “bucket list” of things to do while you can. Would it be new destinations or revisits to favorite places? Please add a line telling the reason for your selections. We’ll publish the results in a future Centurian.

Though it has been reported in the national news, we wanted to remind you that a new schedule of passport fees took effect on July 13. For new passports, the fee jumped from $100 to $135; renewals increased from $75 to $110; children under 16 from $85 to $105. Additional visa pages were previously free but now there is a fee of $82. |

TCC members often find themselves on the same charter flights to out-of-the-way TCC destinations. This group recently visited Midway Island: Robert Bonifas, another fellow traveler, Robert Petrik, Lee Abbamonte, Pam Barrus, Cathy Parda, Carolyn Broadwell, JoAnn Schwartz, Steven Tallman. Roelof Moniz is kneeling.
In addition to the travelers

former TCC
President Kevin Hughes,
Phoenix, and Carl-Gustaf Siby,

Arizona (Phoenix)
Area Coordinator Matt Cohen reports that
that the chapter had a very successful year
and is ready to start the new season with the
same format of four meetings on Thursday
nights, spaced between October and April.
He notes that Phoenix is hot in the summer
months and members travel, but a couple of
informal small lunches were scheduled for
July. They also have small lunches at the
Culinary Café in the fall and spring.
However, he says members enjoy meeting at
members’ homes rather than restaurants.
He appreciates the four hosts who opened
up their homes and hospitality this past
year. Each meeting had a program after a
social period.
Cohen thanks new member Dan Fellner for getting an article published in the
Arizona Republic. “This resulted in a dramatic
increase in our membership,” he continues,
“and we are now quite a large chapter.
Members enjoy exchanging travel info
and tips and socializing. All programs have
been well received.”
The chapter welcomes members who may
be visiting Phoenix. Check the TCC website
for meeting details.

the meeting, including New Guinea, St.
Petersburg, Nepal, Alaska and Mongolia. The

with the crew.

need to be someone from Houston, as before.
Interested parties should contact TCC
Headquarters in Santa Monica.
Eastern Canada (Toronto)
Rick Shaver, Area Coordinator for the new
Eastern Canada chapter, says the first meeting
will be in November. Details will be
posted on the TCC Web site. Area members

TCC Vice President Pam Barrus is on the road again – this time on a two-month solo overland trip the length of Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town. It’s a revisit after 40 years. She looks forward to seeing places like Ujiji, the Serengeti, sources of the Nile and the Ulha de Mozambique. She is keeping a record of her trip at www.pamafricanqueen.blogspot.com.
With announced plans to relaunch the Soviet-era Lada automobile to the British budget market, Jeff Shea notes that in 1998 he and his Russian friends bought two Lada 4WDs and drove them to Everest’s Rongbuk base camp at 5,200 meters (17,000 ft.) on the north (Tibet) side. The following year Lada and his friends drove them to the highest point on record, as far as they know, to 5,726 meters (18,787 ft.) in Tibet. The car that made it is in the Lada museum. To see a recap of the trip, go to www.jeffshea.com/index.php.
New TCC member Warren Winn Klaine was recently featured on the first page of the Palm Beach Daily News. The article depicted his presentation on his trip to Africa to the Palm Beach Circumnavigators Club. He had just become their youngest member, at the age of 24. He said he believes in getting American youth out of the country to experience other cultures.
