The Saint Louis TCC Chapter had another excellent meeting on Sunday, Nov. 9, in which we had a record turnout of 27 attendees. TCC members were joined by several members of the International Travel Cub of Saint Louis who are potential TCC members.
The activities began with an enjoyable brunch at Bixby’s Restaurant in the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, during which time the members introduced themselves and exchanged travel anecdotes. After our brunch, we heard and saw a very professional presentation titled “Musings of an International Opium Buyer,” which was presented by Robert Kent, now retired, who was for many years a buyer for Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals of St. Louis.
Robert shared some of his travel experiences and insights of several years when he was commissioned to corner the market on confiscated opium with the approval of the State Department, DEA, and the CIA. He focused in particular on his time in Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion in 1980. He responded to questions after the presentation.
The next meeting will be on May 9 (4 till 7) at Amighetti’s on “the Hill” 5141 Wilson Street in Saint Louis. The Speaker will be Arthur Bolstead and the topic will be Madagascar. Arthur who has lived and worked for many years in Madagascar will give his insights into this srtange and wonderful Island.
Ideas for speakers and venues for future meetings are always welcome. Contact Charles Merkel at email@example.com or call (314) 644-7797.
