Hello World Travelers,
What a pleasure it was to have Gord Miller — one of Canada’s most famous sportscasters — join us for our Zoom call on Feb. 28. Gord spoke with us from Ottawa in his hotel room following his play-by-play broadcast of the Ottawa Senators/Calgary Flames game the night before. He recounted a few stories from the 11 Olympic games, dozens of hockey world championships and many other sporting events he has traveled to around the world.
Some highlights included a behind-the-scenes recounting of a trip he took with Canadian Olympic hockey gold medalists and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to the Canadian Military base in Kandahar Afghanistan. Gord described the secrecy and security around the trip amd meeting the incredibly appreciative Canadian soldiers on the base.
Other stories included a hilarious one about a Russian hockey coach he interviewed pretending not to speak English in an interpreter-aided interview, until Wayne Gretzky showed up and he then spoke perfect English in order to get a picture with Wayne.
Many thanks to Gord for joining us, as he said afterward that he enjoyed meeting so many of “Canada’s most traveled people,” and aspires to join the club some day!
We also gave new member Ilsa Steinberg of Toronto a warm welcome as she joins with 109 countries.
Our next TCC Canada Zoom call will be on Saturday, May 15, at noon — details to follow
