A reception followed at The Market next door, with birthday cake and coffee to celebrate the 88th birthday of Jon Hager.

The topic for the November meeting was “My travel inspiration, where it came from, where it leads me next.” Everyone was invited to contribute, and a very interesting conversation ensued.

A very special guest at the meeting was Dr. Shiri Van and his wife Kanchana from Carbondale, Illinois. He related using his fathers rail passes to travel the length and breadth of the Indian Subcontinent as a teenager. Charles Merkel told of of his interest in shortwave radio and attendance at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair. Jon Hagar, celebrating his 88th birthday, told us about the influence of Burton Holmes, the developer of the “travelogue” format and how he influenced Jon to go from newspaper reporter to years on the travelogue circuit. Military service, marriage and especially reading of travel writers seems to be powerful influences.

The next meeting is tentatively set late April or May at a site yet to be determined.
