More than 80 TCC members and guests gathered on Dec. 14, 2019, for the Charter Chapter’s Annual International Holiday Lunch at Lawry’s The Prime Rib in Beverly Hills, California amidst festive decorations and travel celebrations.

Pauline Chakmakjian, a TCC member who also volunteers as an honorary Visit Kyoto Ambassador, presented a fascinating program on “Time and Space in Japan,” exploring the historical ideas about Japanese notions of travel and traveling. The Past (art, spiritual and political history), Present (contemporary culture) and Future (the 2020 Tokyo Olympics) were examined and showcased Japan’s transition from an insular, closed society to a cosmopolitan international center.

A highlight of the afternoon was the recognition of eight members who have achieved new TCC destination levels. Pins and certificates honoring these accomplishments were awarded to David Horne (300 countries/territories), Richard and Jackie Swanberg (both with 250), JoAnn Schwartz, Steve Smith, John and Karen Stern (each with 200) as well as Johanna Corbett (150).

The international flair of the event was evident with attendees coming from Malaysia, New Zealand, England and Canada in addition to U.S. members from New York, North Carolina, Illinois, Missouri and all corners of California. The crowd included 21 guests and three first-time attendees.
