During out April 10 meeting, TCC NorCal member Mark Blum, took us to a very remote part of the world, Pitcairn Islands. His excellent presentation explained the history of this exotic place made famous by HMS Bounty. Mark’s knowledge and love of the sea and sailing added an exciting dimension to this presentation which included underwater photos while scuba diving in the world’s largest fully protected marine reserve around the Pitcairn Islands.
Members from the Charter (Los Angeles and Orange County) and San Diego Chapters were invited to Zoom with Northern California Chapter for an “All California” event. Coordinators Gloria McCoy (San Diego) and Michael Sholer (Charter Chapter) addressed the group and welcomed their members in particular.
At the conclusion of Mark’s presentation, members convened in breakout rooms with their respective coordinator. Discussions touched on travel plans and thoughts about timing for in-person meetups in the future.
The “All California” event was well attended and Mark received much praise for his excellent presentation.
Our next meeting on Saturday, June 5, at 11 a.m. Pacific time (2 p.m. in Florida) will feature “Mauritania to Bissau: Observations on the Road.” NorCal member Kent Kuran had three weeks to kill and set out on an overland trip from Mauritania to Bissau! Taxis, donkey carts and car ferries transported him along the coastal route which was moderately safer than the old caravan routes that would have carried him inland through areas with less stability and more potential risks. Motoring through Senegal, Gambia to Guinea Bissau’s airport was an adventure of a lifetime, and Kent will share those experiences at our Zoom meeting on June 5!
Kent and family are moving from Northern California to Florida. While we will miss having Kent among the Northern California membership, we are happy to have this opportunity to introduce him to the membership in Florida where he will be part of the Miami area chapter.
