He was brave, sincere, and epitomized the American values of hard work and resourcefulness. She was beautiful, daring, charming, a crack shot who enjoyed high adventure. Together, Martin and Osa Johnson were acclaimed filmmakers, photographers and explorers. They were heroes, who in the style of Richard Byrd and Charles Lindbergh, brought the adventure and fascination of world travel into the homes of millions of Americans.

From 1917-1936, the Johnsons set up camp in some of the most remote areas of the world and provided an unmatched photographic record of the wildernesses of Kenya, the Congo, Borneo and the Solomon and New Hebrides Islands. This program introduces these remarkable globe trotters and gives a glimpse at the legacy that these two Kansans left for future generations.

Our presenter, Jacquelyn Borgeson Zimmer, is curator of the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum in Chanute, Kansas. Jacque was hired at the museum upon completion of her Masters of Arts in 1995. Jacque develops curriculum, conservation programs and curates national touring exhibitions. She is the liaison to sister museums in Burkina Faso and in Malaysia and has presented museum lecture programs across the US, in Chile, Ireland, and the Czech Republic. In preparation for a number of 100th anniversary projects celebrating the Johnson’s earliest trips, Jacque retraced the Johnson’s footsteps throughout Kenya and opened a centennial exhibition in Vanuatu. Jacque is curating a new gallery at the museum that will focus on the astounding female pioneers whose collections form the core of the museum’s world class collection.
