An Invitation to Join the TCC Book Club

The May 2024 TCC Book Club selection was an account of British explorer Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole.

Looking for something to read that complements your travel? The TCC Book Club might be helpful. Every month, the Book Club meets before Virtual Exploration to discuss a book. Selections are less than 400 pages, manageable with everyone’s busy schedule.

Books thus far have included, I Married Adventure, by Osa Johnson. The curator from the Johnson Museum in Chanute, Kansas joined us; Bob Payne’s Escape Clauses recounts a travel writer’s life; Rory Stewart’s The Places in Between highlights his walk across Afghanistan from Herat to Kabul and encounters with the Taliban and local ethnic groups; Carl Hoffman’s The Lunatic Express: Discovering the World …via Its Most Dangerous Buses, Boats, Trains and Planes details Carl’s six months taking transportation that most TCC members would avoid because of abysmal safety standards and discomfort.

Selections rotate around contemporary travel, historical travel and adventure travel. Alfred Lansing’s Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage will be the May book. Written in 1959, it’s the definitive account of the failed Antarctica expedition of 28 men and the harrowing but successful struggle to survive and return to civilization. Their perilous journey is considered one of the greatest adventure stories of all times and a study of effective leadership.
