Where to Start?

“You wouldn’t believe who Carol and I ran into at the 1876 Wild West Bucket of Blood Saloon in historic Virginia City, Nevada? Rodney and Colleen Lineweber!” This email from Michael Sholer reminded me of the time Lana and I ran into Nico Coratella at the Brest Fortress in Belarus. “Is that Nico from Italy?” (We met at Barcelona 2018.)

What drives us to join? We all want the recognition, that certificate and pin, but does it get better? As editor, past president with a fair amount of club tenure, I can definitely say that the camaraderie is real. Dave and Merry Jo Binkley often say, “We’ve found our tribe.” Yes. It is more than a membership certificate … we’re a social club.

Steve and Diane Owad-Jones arranged a Calgary Stampede meetup with Christine Gillespie, Robyn Antill and Peter Campbell. Meanwhile Tim and Lana Skeet detour back to Brisbane to meet up with friends, Gary and Susan Turnbull.

Since the 2018 conference in Barcelona, there has been an increasing thirst to connect with each other. Just in this last quarter, epic TCC events like the New York Regional Meet-Up and the Central Europe weekend in Salzburg, Austria had a record number of attendees. The lists continue to grow as most return year after year. It cements in my mind that we enjoy each other as much as we like to travel.

How do you get there? Start small by attending a local meet-up or a conference. Get involved on the WhatsApp thread. Wherever you go, let the organizer know that you don’t know anyone and they’ll help to connect you with others.

We all have kindred spirits within the club and I’ve learned it is better to celebrate our accomplishments together as friends!

Verena Tauchert shares a dance with Thomas Straub in the Salzburg Alstadt. Christopher Thorjussen, Armin Schreiner, Dave Binkley, and Dirk Hannemann take a moment to hug a “Gurken” on Salzburg’s Walk of Modern Art.
