October 2024 Virtual Exploration Program and TCC Book Club Update

Timeless Treasures: An Exploration of Archaeological Travel
Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024
2 p.m. Eastern Time (US and Canada)

We are looking forward to two experts in the field of archaeology to speak to us at the October Virtual Exploration. Please join us to hear about what to see and why as we virtually visit many ancient sites of the world.

Thomas Dowson
Founder & CEO Archaeology Travel
Following a childhood dream, Thomas trained as an archaeologist in South Africa, then taught the subject in England. While his research and teaching focused on prehistoric art, he also addressed the contemporary and social relevance of the subject, including the presentation of archaeological sites to the public for tourism. This interest lead him to create the website Archaeology Travel, with the aim of promoting such historic destinations and providing resources for people to explore the world’s pasts in sustainable and meaningful ways. Thomas shares his website, travel recommendations and services all completely free of charge as a “giveback”. He has visited well over 100 of the world’s most iconic such sites, and countless lesser-known sites. Thomas will be sharing his experiences, suggestions and tips for exploring the best of Europe’s archaeology, from prehistory to the medieval period.

Dr. Stefan Woehlke
Co-Owner and Chief Curation Officer, at Far Horizons
Stefan has been combining his love of archaeology, cultural heritage, and travel for over 20 years. His passion to empower communities and transform society was born in Belize, where archaeologists worked with community members to build ways to generate impactful incomes for local families. Over the years, Stefan has travelled extensively with his wife and Far Horizons co-owner Mary Collins for most of these adventures. They quickly realized that travel and tourism can have immense potential for bringing money and investments to communities in need. Stefan helped Mary build their first company, Blue Fern Travel, with the mission to ensure that tourist dollars get into the community through locally-owned businesses. In 2022, Stefan and Mary purchased Far Horizons Archaeology and Cultural Trips. They saw this as an opportunity to expand cross-cultural engagement, support archaeological research, and expand local benefits from the international travel industry.

TCC Book Club
The TCC Book Club will discuss Jungle: A Harrowing True Story of Survival in the Amazon by Yossi Ghinsberg. This book recounts the author’s experience in surviving for weeks alone in the remote area of the Amazon. Stranded without a knife, map, or survival training, he improvised shelter, foraged for fruits and bird eggs, and defended himself against invasive insects and wild animals to survive — but just barely. All TCC members are welcome to participate.

The book discussion is 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time before the October 19 Virtual Exploration meeting and uses the same Zoom link.

Preview of the November Virtual Exploration
Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024
2 p.m. Eastern Time (US and Canada)

The November 2024 Virtual Exploration presentation will be on the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency that is located in the Irish Sea roughly equidistant between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. We will have two speakers for this topic to tell us about logistics, what to see, and give us an inside view of the famous Tourist Trophy race that is held on the island.

Wendy Arbeit
Wendy is a Diamond TCC member with 306 TCC destinations under her belt. She is thrilled to present on her trip to the Isle of Man, which she visited in September 2023 (her TCC #292). Join her as she presents on the Isle of Man’s highlights and history, how to get there (and how to get around), and where to stay. Along with her colorful photos and videos, she will include entertaining tidbits and facts about this truly unique yet accessible destination.

Joining Wendy will be a Tourist Trophy racer, officially known as the Isle of Man TT. This is one of the most famous and dangerous motorcycle racing events in the world and it takes place annually, always on the Isle of Man. The race has a long history dating back to its inception in 1907 and has become a legendary event within motorsports due to its very challenging course, the extreme level of skill required to compete and sadly, the frequent fatalities. Learn more about attending this dramatic event and about the racers who put their lives on the line to compete.
