With his enjoyable wit and humour, he took us on a photo tour of some of his favorite trips around the globe – front row at the Beijing Olympic opening ceremonies, South Pacific Islands, Newfoundland, Slovenia, Vietnam, and California to name a few. It was excellent.  Jim also gave us some of the background on how he and his colleagues produce Canada’s biggest newspaper travel section twice a week!

On behalf of the 25 members present, we thanked Jim with a bottle of Jack Daniel’s as a token of our appreciation.

Five new members are in the process of joining our Canadian chapter. Jane Shaver is our newest provisional member with 75 countries. With 100 plus countries and territories are Alan and Anne Shaver (Rick’s third cousin – they share the same great grandfather!), along with Tom Longmuir, Jurgen Freise and David Selly.

Margaret SwainFor the next Eastern Canada meeting on Nov. 24 , nationally published wine, spirits, food and travel writer Margaret Swaine will be the guest speaker. Margaret has authored over 2,000 articles for various magazines and newspapers. She is the weekly wine columnist for the National Post newspaper, the spirit columnist for Zoomer magazine and the spa columnist for Best Health. She’s also a contributor to ScoreGolf, Foodservice Hospitality, Travelweek Bulletin, Expressions, Arrival, Nuvo, Wine Access, Elle Canada, Hello! Canada, Fairways, ClubLink NewsLink and national newspaper groups such as CanWest. She writes for internet sites such as GoMedia Canada, Gayot.com, Takeoff Eh! and Travel Industry Today.

The Nov. 24 meeting will be held at The Hive, 544 King Street in West Toronto: One block west of Spadina Avenue on King Street West. Across the street is a Starbucks with lots of parking spaces. The name on the building is The Hive, which is the name of RIck Shaver‘s company. Please have a look at this Google map or call Rick on his mobile phone (416-566-7400) if you need further directions.

Lynn L. will be ordering the food from Lahore Tika (probably the best known Indo-Pakistani restaurant in Toronto). As always a nominal food charge of about $10. RSVP at your earliest convenience to Rick Shaver, rshaver@thehiveinc.com.

Also at this meeting we will be starting a TCC Canada tradition: The First Annual TCC Canada tacky goofy holiday gift exchange! It is very simple. Find a tacky and or goofy souvenir you bought on one of your trips. Wrap it up, bring it to the meeting for an exchange with other members’ tacky goofy gifts.
