In January 2020, I took this photo at the Timkat (Ethiopian epiphany) celebration in Addis Ababa. The jubilant observance was held on the local fairgrounds, and it was completely packed with performing bands and onlookers. I was captivated by this musician, who was fully enraptured with her harp, seemingly in her own world. It was a peaceful, calm moment amid the bustling crowd and festivities.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Laurel Glassman, Chevy Chase, Maryland
In Jaisalmer, India, this street musician, with his eye-catching red and yellow turban, reached out to us with the plaintive melody he was creating from his homemade wooden instrument. The music curled down the nar- row street to our quaint, classic haveli. We were mesmerized, as was the large, light-col- ored cow idling nonchalantly nearby.

When the music stops: In Tijuana, Mexico, a mariachi takes a break from his guitar free up his hands and enjoy a taco in between sets.
