Please join us for the March 2024 Northern California Chapter Meeting at the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco:

  • WHEN: Saturday, March 2, 2024
    11 am – Social time
    Noon – Lunch
  • WHERE: Basque Cultural Center, 599 Railroad Avenue, South San Francisco, CA 94080 (free parking)
  • SPEAKER: Lucy Hsu – Syria!

Lucy Hsu was born and raised in San Jose, California. In May 2023, she finally entered her last UN country, Syria, at the age of 42. Lucy considers herself a “late starter” when it comes to travel, as she got her first passport at the age of 23. Being the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, her childhood was very modest, so the idea of travel was something luxurious and unattainable. As a child, she developed a love for Geography, World History, and a fascination with maps and mysteries of the world.

Becoming a public-school teacher was her dream, and eventually this career path afforded her the time and resources to travel extensively. After her first trip to Europe in 2004, she began dedicating the four months of annual school holidays to traveling and volunteering/teaching abroad. In 2013, she joined TCC and was introduced to many other travel communities, such as NomadMania and Every Passport Stamp. Meeting so many prolific travelers inspired her to follow in some of their footsteps to visit all the UN countries in the world.

Lucy was elated when news broke in March 2023 that an American traveler successfully entered Syria, as visa approvals for U.S. passports had been unattainable for several years. For her last UN country, she spent a week exploring multiple highlights in Syria: Damascus, Maaloula, Krak des Chevaliers, Palmyra, Aleppo, and Homs. She’s excited to share experiences from this trip with fellow travelers.
