At the September 2024 Southwest Florida (Sarasota) TCC Chapter meeting, two presentations were given on trips to the Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands, a remote Japanese archipelago. The presentations highlighted two areas: Chichijima, the main island favored by tourists for its natural attractions, and Iwo Jima, a restricted military base and the site of a pivotal World War II battle.
Jill Melkonian shared her experiences from her July trip to Chichijima, accessible only by a weekly 24-hour ferry from Tokyo. Jill was one of just two foreigners on the ferry. Many families were traveling to the island for summer holidays, as the ferry not only carries passengers but also transports goods to the island, offering six different classes of service.
Once on the island, visitors are drawn to the natural beauty both above and below the water, as well as its stunning beaches and coves. Chichijima is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Transportation on the island is limited, with only one taxi and a couple of public buses. Jill also brought back a local specialty, black honey, for everyone to sample.
Bob and Cynthia Collins spoke about their visit to Iwo Jima for the 70th anniversary of the battle. Iwo Jima can only be visited once a year through a special historical tour. Bob, a Marine Corps veteran, explained the selection process for this highly sought-after trip, where priority is given to Iwo Jima survivors, followed by other WWII veterans, active-duty military personnel, former military members, and finally civilians.
The 70th-anniversary tour was four times larger than previous tours due to the special commemorations. Bob and Cynthia had the privilege of traveling alongside distinguished guests, including a WWII Medal of Honor recipient, Iwo Jima and WWII survivors, and senior military officials. Meeting these extraordinary individuals was one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
Additionally, the meeting recognized Kike Calvo, who was recently inducted as a Fellow of the Explorers Club. Kike will be speaking at the Tampa Aquarium Tide Talks on October 9, with registration details to be announced soon.
