November 2024 Virtual Exploration Program and TCC Book Club Update

The Isle of Man
Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024
2 p.m. Eastern Time (US and Canada)

The November Virtual Exploration presentation will be on the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency that is located in the Irish Sea roughly equidistant between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. We will have two speakers for this topic to tell us about logistics, what to see, and give us an inside view of the famous TT race that is held on the island.

Wendy Arbeit
Wendy is a Diamond TCC member with 306 TCC destinations under her belt. She is thrilled to present on her trip to the Isle of Man, which she visited in September 2023 (her TCC #292). Join her as she presents on the Isle of Man’s highlights and history, how to get there (and how to get around), and where to stay. Along with her colorful photos and videos, she will include entertaining tidbits and facts about this truly unique yet accessible destination.

Joining Wendy will be a Tourist Trophy racer, officially known as the Isle of Man TT. This is one of the most famous and dangerous motorcycle racing events in the world and it takes place annually, always on the Isle of Man. The race has a long history dating back to its inception in 1907 and has become a legendary event within motorsports due to its very challenging course, the extreme level of skill required to compete and sadly, the frequent fatalities. Learn more about attending this dramatic event and about the racers who put their lives on the line to compete.

TCC Book Club
Our selection this month is Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria (320 pages, 2012) by Noo Saro-Wiwa. She was born in Nigeria but grew up mostly in the United Kingdom. After her father, activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, was killed in Nigeria, she didn’t return for several years. Then she decided to come to terms with the country her father had given his life for. Traveling from the chaos of Lagos to the calmness of the eastern mountains, she explores Nigerian Christianity, delves into the country’s history of slavery, examines the corrupting effect of oil, and ponders the huge success of Nollywood.

The November TCC Book Club discussion is on Saturday Nov. 16, at 12:30 p.m. EST and uses the same zoom link as the Virtual Exploration meeting. All TCC members are invited to participate.
