The men’s individual sabre fencing was particularly interesting to me at the 2024 Paris Games — the 33rd Olympiad. In the Grand Palais, securing a point for the United States on the left is 23-year-old Mitchell Saron. Yes. That’s my son! While number one-ranked Elsissy (right) would go on to win 15-13, he only placed fourth overall (perhaps the worst place to finish as it is so close to a medal). Mitchell finished a respectable fourteenth overall and I was incredibly proud of his accomplishment on the world stage, representing the United States.

I missed my only opportunity to tour the magnificent Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla during the city’s annual Feria. Consequently, the only way to see the inside of the Baroque bullring was to attend an actual bullfight. What made this contest remarkable was that the matador had only one eye. That eye proved to be enough. Almost too close for comfort!

Captured in the serene waters of Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica, this moment reminds us that not every story needs to be told in full. Sometimes, it’s the suggestion — the ripples in the water, the play of light and shadow — that sparks the imagination. The unseen invites the mind to weave its narrative, filling in the gaps between movement and stillness.
