Meet Washington, D.C. Co-Coorindator Olivia Carter-Pokras

I grew up in a family where the world was always close. My father was an anthropologist whose research took him across Latin America, and my mother — a Bolivian public health nurse — was not content to stay home while he was in the field. One summer, she quietly saved up enough from the household budget to take my two sisters and me on a trip to visit family and friends from Ecuador to Chile. The four of us shared a single suitcase. I have applied that lesson in resourceful travel ever since.
After the Peace Corps in Kenya, graduate studies at Johns Hopkins, and a career in public health, I retired as Professor Emerita of Epidemiology at the University of Maryland in 2021 and joined the TCC. My husband Bob and I share a passion for wildlife, birding, and snorkeling. With 130 TCC countries and territories, I still have plenty of road ahead.
