The Magellan Travel Index

Atlântico Business School, a university based in Portugal, and the Extraordinary Travel Festival have created a global ranking system designed to measure and compare the achievements of the world’s most traveled individuals. Named after the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the Magellan Travel Index (MTI) honors the first successful circumnavigation of the globe.

The index is innovative in two key ways. First, it integrates major travel rankings and tracking systems, including the TCC, Most Traveled People, and NomadMania. Second, it moves beyond quantitative metrics by incorporating qualitative criteria such as UNESCO World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage lists, cities, and international borders. The MTI is overseen by an independent council representing the world’s most influential travel clubs, with broad participation from the TCC, including several of our long-standing members such as João Paulo Peixoto, JoAnn Schwartz, and Ric Gazarian.

More information about the index can be found at magellantravelindex.com.
